Renew Healthy Relationships

ReNew is an Australian-first program aimed at tackling family violence. The niche program works specifically with mothers and children who have experienced family violence, and where the young person is showing signs of abusive behaviour. ReNew helps to create new foundations for healthy family relationships.

Witnessing or being a victim of domestic violence is traumatic, particularly for children. Often, boys find it particularly challenging to cope with, and sometimes go on to use abusive, controlling or coercive behaviour in their own family relationships.

ReNew is aimed at breaking this domestic violence cycle through early intervention and the renewal of healthy relationships. We work with boys aged between 11 and 17, together with their mothers. This process of working through trauma together and strengthening the relationship is an Australian-first.

The free program runs over 20 weeks, and involved group therapy, individual counselling and joint mother/son counselling sessions.

ReNew aims to improve the relationship by working through past abuse and trauma, supporting mothers’ parenting skills and holding young people accountable for their own violent behaviours.

Griffith University’s School of Human Services and Social Work will be providing research support throughout the project.
