Technology facilitated abuse – understanding the issues and how frontline workers can improve the safety of women

Presenter: Karen Bentley is the National Director for the Safety Net Australia Project, WESNET.

There is a disturbing increase in the number of women experiencing technology facilitated abuse as perpetrators use digital means to monitor and control women’s movements.

The 1800 Respect Webinar “Technology facilitated abuse – understanding the issues and how frontline workers can improve the safety of women” was a brief overview of how technology is being misused by perpetrators as part of domestic and family violence.

While new technologies can provide a very valuable, flexible link to friends, family and support services for women experiencing domestic or family violence, they can also become a tool for an abuser to harass, control, monitor and humiliate an intimate partner or ex-partner. So knowing how to increase safety when using digital technology is very important. This webinar will focus on how understanding the issues and how frontline workers can support women with practical advice and tools to increase their safety when using digital technology and online media.

WESNET’s SafetyNet Australia program looks at the intersection between violence against women and technology. WESNET has partnered with Telstra to provide new smartphones to women experiencing domestic violence and training for frontline workers.
